4K Stogram: desktop backup with a discontinuation constraint
4K Download states that 4K Stogram is still available, but it no longer provides user support or bug fixes. Its discontinuation FAQ says Instagram's increasing restrictions and unpredictable operation meant the vendor could no longer guarantee proper functionality and that user account safety was jeopardized. For an existing local archive, the app documents automatic downloads for new posts, Stories, Highlights, Reels, and Tagged posts from subscriptions. It also supports exporting and importing subscriptions, including after major software or hardware reinstalls. See the documented features.
The documented path for backing up your own account is:
- Launch 4K Stogram.
- Log into your Instagram account in the app.
- Choose Edit > Download > My Account for posts, Highlights, and current Stories.
- Choose Edit > Download > My Saved Posts to add Saved collections.

Instaloader: a customizable local archive
Instaloader is free, open-source software written in Python. It can download pictures or videos with captions and metadata; its documentation also lists public and private profiles, hashtags, user stories, feeds, saved media, comments, and geotags. See Instaloader's feature list.
For a targeted archive, its per-target options include --stories, --highlights, --tagged, --reels, --igtv, and --comments. It also supports post and story-item filters, and exposes its internal methods and structures as a Python API for customized media and metadata workflows. See the basic usage documentation.
For incremental work, Instaloader automatically resumes previously interrupted download iterations. Its GitHub documentation shows instaloader --fast-update profile [profile ...]; the documented behavior is to stop when the first already-downloaded picture is reached. See the project repository.
A periodic archive is possible because Instaloader is suitable for running as a cronjob. The documentation says --quiet disables user interaction and non-error logging, and a session file can be created with instaloader --login=your_username for non-interactive logged-in use. See the cron guidance.

Login, privacy, and operating cautions
4K Stogram's documented private-account workflow requires logging into an Instagram account in the app. Instaloader can save a session cookie for later non-interactive private-profile downloads; its basic-usage documentation says the session file is saved at ~/.config/instaloader/session-YOUR-USERNAME. Instaloader documents login with and without two-factor authentication and says checkpoint challenges are handled by directing the user to a browser URL. It also says the project is independent, unofficial, and not affiliated with or endorsed by Instagram, and instructs users to operate it at their own risk. For anonymous access, Instaloader notes observations that cloud, VPN, and public-proxy IP addresses can face significantly stricter rate limits, while logged-in access did not appear noticeably affected. See the rate-limit note.
