Move an emoji on a Story or Reel (tap and drag)
This is the plain-English version of "move an emoji."
- Open the camera and shoot or upload your photo or video.
- Tap the Stickers icon at the top of the editor. Per Instagram's Help Center, you can add stickers by tapping Stickers at the top, and from there you can select a sticker.
- Tap the emoji sticker you want to add it to your canvas.

Pin an emoji so it moves with your video
Here's the trick most guides skip: an emoji doesn't have to sit still on a video. You can attach it to something that's moving, and it will travel with it.
Unverified legacy guidance. The workflow below comes from a 2021 TechJunkie blog post. We have not verified these steps against the current app — the gesture, the on-screen wording, or the feature's location may all differ in your version. Treat it as a lead to try, not as documented current behaviour.
- Record or upload a video Story.
- Add your emoji or sticker.
- Tap and hold the sticker until the "Pin" screen appears — TechJunkie's 2021 walkthrough says to tap and hold the sticker till the "Pin" screen appears, then move the sticker to where you want it to be pinned.

Make the emoji itself move (animated emoji)
Now the other reading of the question: you don't want to move the emoji, you want the emoji to move.
The text-effect method
The most widely circulated version of this trick, per the top TikTok tutorials, is:
- Open your Story as normal.
- Tap the Aa text tool.
- Type your emoji.
- At the top of the screen, tap the "A" with stars to animate it.
This lines up with what Instagram documents officially: the Help Center's reels guide confirms that the options at the top of the text editor cover your text's alignment, color, highlighting, and animation.
The glow-and-animate variant
A widely-shared creator reel adds a second step for a glowing, animated emoji: in that reel's instructions, you go to your story or reel and go to text, choose the emojis that you want, make sure the third font is selected, press the "A with the 2 stars" at the top for the glow, and also select the "A with the 2 lines" to make it animated.
This is a community hack, not a documented feature. A commenter on that same reel reports the trick no longer works without a background behind the emoji. If your emoji refuses to glow, try adding a background behind the text before you write the effect off.
Add moving GIF stickers
There's a fourth thing people call a "moving emoji," and it's really a GIF. Instagram's official sticker catalog includes a Gif sticker alongside Poll, Add yours, Countdown, Music, Questions and Quiz.
- Open the sticker picker and go to the GIF tab.
