"Transfer my Instagram account" can mean three different things: hand login access to someone else, move content to a fresh profile, or migrate a business/creator asset inside Meta's tools. Instagram does not offer a single button that moves followers, DMs, and posts to a new username like moving a phone number between carriers. Understanding which scenario you face determines the right workflow — and whether you need a full backup before changing anything.

This guide covers each transfer type with step-by-step instructions, Meta's actual limitations, and how to preserve content that official tools do not move automatically.

Three types of Instagram "transfer"

Goal What Meta supports What you must do manually
Give someone else your login Share credentials or add them via Meta Business Suite roles Export content; rotate passwords after handoff
Move to a new personal account No follower migration Re-upload or repost; export first
Transfer business/creator assets Business Manager, Page linkage, some ad assets Content export; update bio links and storefronts

If you expected a built-in "transfer followers to new account" feature, it does not exist for personal profiles. Plan on exporting content and rebuilding audience — or keeping the same account and changing ownership through secure access practices instead.

Before any transfer: export your data

Regardless of transfer type, run Instagram's native export first:

  1. Open Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information
  2. Select your Instagram account
  3. Choose date range (all time for a full move), format (HTML for browsing, JSON for parsing), and media quality (high for originals)
  4. Include posts, stories archive metadata, messages if needed, and profile information
  5. Wait for Meta's email with the download link — large accounts may take up to 48 hours

Store the ZIP outside Instagram — cloud storage, external drive, or encrypted backup — before changing passwords, removing admins, or deleting the old profile.

Run the export on a desktop browser when possible. The request flow is identical on iOS, Android, and web — the download link arrives by email and stays valid for 4 days — but handling a multi-gigabyte ZIP is easier on a computer.

Scenario A: Transfer login access to another person

This is the most common request for small businesses, creator teams, and family accounts. You are not creating a new Instagram account — you are changing who controls the existing one.

Recommended approach (business or creator accounts):

  1. Convert to or confirm a Professional account (Creator or Business) if not already.
  2. Link the Instagram account to a Facebook Page you control via Meta Business Suite.
  3. In Business Suite, add the new person as an admin or employee with appropriate permissions — they get access without sharing your personal Facebook password broadly.
  4. Enable two-factor authentication on the underlying Facebook/Instagram identity. Both parties should use authenticator apps, not SMS alone.
  5. Document what was transferred: ad account access, linked shops, payment methods, content calendar tools.

If you must share direct login (not recommended):

  1. Export data first (see above).
  2. Change the email and phone on the account to one the new owner controls — Settings and activity → Accounts Center → Personal details → Contact info.
  3. Set a new password the old owner does not know.
  4. Remove old recovery devices and sessions: Settings → Security → Login activity.
  5. Update linked payment methods, bio links, and third-party apps (link-in-bio tools, schedulers).

Sharing passwords violates Meta's terms and creates security risk. Prefer Business Suite roles or Meta's official admin assignment. Never transfer an account through DMs from someone claiming to be "Instagram support."

Scenario B: Move content to a new Instagram account

When you want a clean username, a fresh start after a hack, or separation from an old brand name, you create a new account and move content manually.

Step-by-step:

  1. Export the old account via Download Your Information (all time, high quality).
  2. Create the new account with the desired username. Secure it immediately with a unique password and 2FA.
  3. Extract media from the ZIP — photos and videos live in dated folders inside the export. Sort chronologically if you care about feed order.
  4. Re-upload posts via the Instagram app or a approved scheduling tool. Captions are in the export HTML/JSON — copy them manually; Instagram does not bulk-import old posts with original timestamps.
  5. Update external links — website, Linktree, YouTube descriptions, email signatures — to the new @handle.
  6. Announce the move on the old account with a pinned post or Story series pointing followers to the new profile. Followers do not auto-migrate.
  7. Archive or deactivate the old account once the transition period ends — after you confirm the export is safe.

Re-uploading hundreds of posts is tedious. Prioritize high-value content: portfolio pieces, viral posts, product launches, and anything with licensing or revenue attached.

Scenario C: Transfer business assets in Meta Business Manager

For agencies, acquired brands, or organizational restructuring, asset transfer happens in Meta's business layer — not inside the Instagram app alone.

  1. Open Meta Business Suite and go to your Business Portfolio — the current name for what used to be Business Manager, and the layer where ownership, Partner access, and asset transfers live.
  2. Identify assets: Instagram account, connected Facebook Page, ad account, pixel, catalog.
  3. Use Business settings → Accounts → Instagram accounts (or equivalent) to assign partners or transfer ownership per Meta's current partner sharing flow — labels change; follow in-product instructions.
  4. Resolve payment methods — ad billing must move to the new legal entity's card or invoice profile.
  5. Export organic content separately; Business Manager moves permissions, not your photo library.

Legal review may be required for trademarked usernames, contracted creator accounts, or employee-owned profiles used for company marketing.

Back up before you transfer

Any transfer — login handoff, new account migration, or Business Manager reassignment — can go wrong: wrong person gets admin, export link expires, or posts are lost during a rushed password change. Before you reassign access or publish the "we moved" announcement, set up a continuous archive of your public @handle through social media backup tools like SocialGuardian. Public posts, Reels, and metadata are captured on a schedule without your password, giving you a rolling copy independent of Meta's one-time export. That archive bridges the gap between today's official download and whatever you repost on the new account — especially for content you might forget to re-upload.

Preserving followers and verification

Followers: Instagram does not transfer follower lists between accounts. Mitigations:

  • Pinned migration post on the old profile for 30–90 days
  • Cross-promotion on other platforms you control
  • Story highlights on the old account linking to the new profile until deactivation

Verification (blue badge): Verification is tied to the account identity, not portable as a checkbox transfer. The new account must apply through Meta's verification flow independently — eligibility rules apply.

Username: If you want the old username on the new account, you must free it first (change old account's username or delete/deactivate the old account) before registering it on the new profile. Usernames become available after deletion on Meta's schedule — not instantly, and Meta does not publish when (or guarantee that) a released username can be re-registered.

What about DMs and close friends?

Exported messages appear in Download Your Information if you selected that category. They do not import into another Instagram account's inbox. Save the export ZIP for reference; inform contacts of your new handle through DMs before losing access to the old inbox.

Close Friends lists and Story privacy settings do not transfer. Rebuild lists on the new account manually.

Third-party tools and scrapers

Avoid services that ask for your Instagram password to "clone" an account. Meta explicitly warns against credential sharing. For public content, archive by @handle instead — see our Instagram backup page for what continuous capture includes.

Random downloader sites break when Instagram changes markup and cannot recover private content ethically.

Checklist: transfer week timeline

Day 1–2: Request full export. Start continuous public archive. Inventory linked tools (shop, ads, schedulers).

Day 3–5: Receive export ZIP; verify media opens. Set up new account or Business Suite roles.

Day 6–7: Begin content migration or admin handoff. Update bios and external links.

Week 2+: Announce move. Monitor follower questions. Deactivate old account only after confirming backups.

Summary

Instagram account transfer is really access transfer, content export, or business asset reassignment — not a follower port. Export everything via Download Your Information before changing logins. Use Meta Business Suite for team access instead of password sharing. Re-upload content manually when moving to a new @handle. Continuous social media backup preserves public posts while you work through the migration.
