A reliable YouTube preservation plan separates video files from structured channel data. Use Google Takeout for uploaded videos, the YouTube Data API for playlist and comment records, and a local playback check before you rely on the archive.

Start with the right kind of YouTube backup
There are two different backup jobs:
- Video-file backup: YouTube says uploaded videos can be downloaded as MP4 at 720p or 360p, depending on video size, and points to Google Takeout for downloading all uploaded videos. Read YouTube's download guidance
- Metadata backup: A CSV workflow such as TubeBuddy's Channel Backup covers video metadata, including titles, tags, and descriptions, but not the video files themselves. See the documented limitation
For comments and playlist order, use the structured API workflows below rather than assuming that a video archive contains every channel record.
Back up all uploaded videos with Google Takeout
Google Takeout creates a copy of Google data. Downloading the archive does not delete the data from Google's servers. Google explains this distinction
Use this workflow:
- In Google Takeout, review the products that are selected automatically because they hold your account data. Google documents the automatic selection
- Deselect products you do not want to export. If the YouTube product offers an All data included control, use it to narrow the data selected within that product. See Google's selection controls
- Choose a delivery method, export type, file type, and archive size. Google lists email, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Box as delivery choices, along with one-time or scheduled exports and ZIP or TGZ files. Review the available export choices
- Create the archive and wait for Google's email with its location. Google says archive creation can take from a few minutes to a few days, depending on the amount of information. Check Google's timing note
Google's documented Takeout options cover account-data selection, while YouTube's own guidance points to Takeout for downloading all uploaded videos. See the Takeout documentation and YouTube's all-video guidance
For comment threads and playlist order, the API procedures in the next sections give you named fields and pagination controls instead of relying on an unspecified export layout. See the playlist API and the comment-thread API
Remember that a Takeout archive is point-in-time: the data file may not include changes made after you request the download and before Google creates the archive. Read Google's archive caveat
Download an individual video from YouTube Studio
For one uploaded video, YouTube documents this desktop path:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- From the left panel, select Content.
- Select the video.
- Select Menu, then Download.
Verify the desktop download path in YouTube Help
YouTube lists limits for individual downloads. A download is blocked when the video has been removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a preapproved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in the last 24 hours. See YouTube's stated limits
Preserve playlist names, metadata, membership, and order
Use the YouTube Data API when your backup needs playlist records and item order. Access to private YouTube data requires OAuth 2.0 authorization; after consent, access and refresh tokens authorize requests and renew access. Read Google's authentication guidance
Follow this sequence:
- Authorize the application with OAuth 2.0 for the account whose playlists you own. Google describes OAuth for private YouTube data
- Call
playlists.listwithmine=trueto retrieve playlists owned by the authenticated user. Request thesnippetpart so the response can include the author, title, description, and time created. Seeplaylists.list - Continue through playlist pages.
playlists.listaccepts up to 50 results per response and exposesnextPageTokenfor the next page. See the pagination parameters - For each playlist, call
playlistItems.listwith itsplaylistId. SeeplaylistItems.list - Store the returned item fields that preserve the playlist structure:
title, description, position, andresourceId. Thepositionfield preserves the item's place in the playlist. Review the playlist-item fields
Google's API sample also shows how to find the authenticated channel with channels.list(mine=true), obtain its uploads playlist ID, and enumerate uploaded videos with playlistItems.list. Read the sample description
Export YouTube comments and replies
The CommentThreads API can retrieve threads for an entire channel or for a specific video. It supports allThreadsRelatedToChannelId and videoId filters. See the available comment-thread filters
Use this workflow:
- Authorize the request with OAuth 2.0 when accessing private channel data. Review YouTube's authorization requirement
- Call
commentThreads.listwithallThreadsRelatedToChannelIdfor channel-related threads orvideoIdfor threads associated with a specific video. SeecommentThreads.list - Request the
id,replies, andsnippetparts so the response can include thread identifiers, replies, and comment data when available. Review the supported parts - Paginate through the results.
maxResultsaccepts 1 to 100 items per response, andnextPageTokenidentifies the next page. See the pagination rules - Choose
textFormat=plainTextif you want plain text; HTML is the default format. See thetextFormatparameter
This gives the comment export an explicit place for thread IDs, replies, text, and pagination instead of treating comments as an undocumented part of a video-file archive. Review the API response parts
Need a simple way to archive public YouTube video content without sharing a password? SocialGuardian says it backs up YouTube among major platforms and works from a public handle or URL. See its platform coverage and start your backup.
Verify the archive before relying on it
Use a local check before you treat a backup as usable:
- Download the archive locally.
- Unzip it.
- Confirm that the primary
.mp4video files play properly. - Keep the verified local copy before taking any irreversible action.
See the archive-verification recommendation
If videos are missing from a Takeout export, Google advises checking whether the channel is associated with a Brand Account and switching accounts if necessary. Read Google's Brand Account tip
The playback check tests the video files directly. For playlists and comments, also retain the API outputs and use their playlist IDs, positions, thread IDs, replies, and page tokens as the structured part of your archive. See the playlist fields and comment response parts
Keep future uploads covered
Google Takeout offers both one-time and scheduled exports. Review the export types
A separate vendor page describes a desktop tool that can run scheduled automated daily backups, check for new videos, and update a local archive without manual triggering. That is the tool's capability, not a YouTube requirement. Read the vendor's automation description
SocialGuardian presents a public-handle flow: share a handle, let it archive the content, and restore or download it later; its site says no password or login is required. It lists YouTube among the platforms it backs up. See the SocialGuardian workflow
Its start page asks for a network and profile handle or URL, permits adding another profile, and offers an optional first-backup confirmation email. The page advertises no password, a 30-day free trial, and cancellation anytime. Start with a profile handle or URL
What this backup can and cannot restore
The workflows above produce copies of uploaded video files, playlist and item records, and comment-thread records. Google Takeout creates a copy, while SocialGuardian describes restoring or downloading archived public content later. See Google's copy clarification and SocialGuardian's workflow
Treat that output as a preservation library: keep the video files, metadata, playlist positions, and comment records together. This guide preserves creator assets and metadata; it does not describe channel-ownership transfer.
