Downloading the video file is only one part of preserving a YouTube channel: a documented Channel Backup tool distinguishes video metadata from the video files themselves in its backup documentation. A metadata backup can include titles, tags, and descriptions according to TubeBuddy, channel records in the Channel resource documentation, playlist details in the playlist resource documentation, thumbnails in the Channel resource documentation, and playlist order in the playlist-item documentation.

The right method depends on whether you need a one-time Google archive, structured records for your own process, a metadata-only export, or recurring protection for one or more profiles.

If you want recurring YouTube backup without handing over a password or login, SocialGuardian says it archives a public @handle and offers download or restore according to SocialGuardian. Start a backup

What a YouTube metadata backup should preserve

Start with the channel record. YouTube documents channel fields including the title, description, custom URL, thumbnails, default language, country, related upload playlist, statistics, privacy status, branding settings, and localizations in the Channel resource documentation.

Then preserve the video-level records you need. Titles, tags, and descriptions are specifically identified as video metadata by a documented Channel Backup tool, which exports that information as a CSV rather than the video files in its documentation.

Treat playlists as records, not just lists of links. A YouTube playlist resource can include its title, description, thumbnails, privacy status, item count, default language, localized text, and localizations in the playlist resource documentation. Each playlist item identifies the playlist, the video ID, and a zero-based position, so the position preserves membership and order in the playlist-item documentation.

For thumbnails, keep the image asset alongside its associated video or playlist record. If you need to set a custom video thumbnail back through the YouTube Data API, the thumbnail endpoint accepts JPEG or PNG media and has a 50 MB maximum file size according to YouTube's thumbnail documentation.

Choose the right backup route

Google Takeout: a point-in-time archive

Google Takeout can export YouTube videos and create an archive for keeping records or transferring data according to Google. It supports email, Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Box delivery; one-time or scheduled exports; ZIP or TGZ files; and splitting large archives by maximum size according to Google's export options.

Use this route when you want a Google-managed export archive. Remember that Google warns an archive may omit changes made between the request and archive creation, so treat each export as a point-in-time snapshot rather than a live mirror according to Google.

Owner-authorized API export: structured records and private data

The YouTube Data API uses OAuth 2.0 for private user data. The requested scope defines which resources an application can retrieve or manage, and an authorized server application can receive access and refresh tokens according to Google's authentication documentation.

This is the route to consider when you need structured channel and playlist records or owner-authorized access. It is an implementation workflow rather than a single dashboard click path:

  1. Authorize access with OAuth 2.0 and request only the scopes the export needs according to Google's authentication documentation.
  2. Read the channel resource, including the channel fields you want to preserve according to YouTube's Channel resource documentation.
  3. Read contentDetails.relatedPlaylists.uploads from the channel resource to obtain the uploads playlist ID according to the Channel resource documentation. Use playlists.list to retrieve the playlist resource, then use playlistItems.list to retrieve that playlist's items and their zero-based positions according to the playlist resource documentation and the playlist-item documentation.
  4. Continue through every paginated list response. When another page exists, use nextPageToken or prevPageToken as the next pageToken according to YouTube's pagination guidance.
  5. Keep the returned records in a structured archive. A documented backup script writes video and playlist records as separate JSON files in its source documentation.

Do not substitute a service account for the documented user authorization flow: Google says the YouTube Data API does not support service-account OAuth and that using it results in NoLinkedYouTubeAccount according to Google's authentication documentation.

CSV or JSON tools: metadata without video files

A CSV export is useful when your immediate goal is a searchable video-metadata register rather than video files. One documented public-channel workflow is:

  1. Log in and open the Channel Backup tool.
  2. Paste the channel URL; the documented workflow supports handle, channel, custom, and legacy user URL forms.
  3. Select โ€œGet Channel Backup.โ€
  4. Download the resulting CSV containing video metadata according to the documented workflow.

A second documented workflow is inside YouTube Studio: open โ€œBulk & Misc Tools,โ€ choose โ€œMisc Tools,โ€ open โ€œChannel Backup,โ€ select the entire video set or only videos since the last backup, and export the result as a CSV according to the Channel Backup documentation.

For raw JSON and thumbnail files, a separate metadata utility documents this workflow:

  1. Submit a video, playlist, or channel URL or ID.
  2. Save the result as a ZIP.
  3. Keep the resulting about.txt, video.json, playlist.json, channel.json, and available thumbnail PNG files together according to the utility's export documentation.

These routes do not have identical scope. The connected-account CSV route is described as read-only and can include unlisted and private uploads on paid plans; its visible free plan is limited to the latest 50 public videos, while the paid plan is described as covering up to 50,000 videos according to the current tool page. Check the scope before treating a public-channel export as a complete owner archive.

How to handle private, unlisted, and public records

Access and visibility are different concerns. The YouTube Data API uses OAuth scopes for private user data according to Google's authentication documentation. A public URL export should not be assumed to contain private or unlisted uploads; one connected-account tool explicitly separates public free-plan access from unlisted and private access on paid plans according to its current scope description.

Record the intended visibility with each playlist or video entry. YouTube defines public items as watchable and shareable by anyone, unlisted items as watchable and shareable by anyone with the link, and private items as unable to share a URL according to YouTube's visibility guidance.

For playlist visibility, the documented Studio path is:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Content, then Playlists.
  3. On the playlist, select Details.
  4. Open Visibility and choose the setting.
  5. Select Save according to YouTube's playlist visibility instructions.

Build a manifest before you need to restore

Use one inventory document for the archive. A recovery guide recommends recording the channel URL and Google or Brand Account owner, source or master files, thumbnail filenames, default titles, descriptions, hashtags and links, a check date, and recovery owners according to its recovery guidance.

Add the structured fields that describe the channel and its relationships:

Label each archive with its check date. This matters because Google describes an export archive as potentially missing changes made between the request and archive creation according to Google.

Can you restore YouTube metadata from CSV or JSON?

A CSV or JSON export gives you records to work from, but YouTube's own upload documentation describes a manual rebuild flow rather than a native CSV/JSON import:

  1. In YouTube Studio, select CREATE, then Upload videos.
  2. Select the video file.
  3. Select Edit on each file to edit its video details according to YouTube's upload documentation.

YouTube says up to 15 videos can be uploaded at a time according to the same upload documentation. If the upload window closes before visibility is chosen, YouTube saves the video as private on the Studio Content page according to YouTube.

A tool-specific restoration claim is different: the Channel Backup documentation says to upload the saved backup file so the video's metadata can be restored according to that tool's documentation. Treat that as the tool's documented workflow, not as a general YouTube-native CSV or JSON import.

For a custom video thumbnail, the YouTube Data API endpoint sets the thumbnail for a video and accepts JPEG or PNG media up to 50 MB according to YouTube's thumbnail documentation.

Finally, test the archive. The recovery guidance recommends running a twenty-minute restore drill according to its recovery guidance. Use the drill to confirm that the manifest, source files, thumbnail filenames, metadata records, ownership details, and playlist order are together before a real recovery is urgent.

A recurring backup plan

Google Takeout supports scheduled exports according to Google's export options. SocialGuardian says content from major platforms, including YouTube, can be backed up automatically every day, with captions and metadata among the protected content types according to SocialGuardian.

For SocialGuardian's documented onboarding:

  1. Choose the network.
  2. Enter the profile handle or URL.
  3. Use โ€œ+ Add another profileโ€ if you need to add another profile.
  4. The start page says the trial requires no password according to SocialGuardian's start page.

SocialGuardian's public product description says the service archives posts, stories, and videos from YouTube and protects captions and metadata; it also describes download or restore from a public @handle without a password or login according to SocialGuardian.
