Instagram's backup options depend on whether you hosted the Live and whether the broadcast has ended. Treat the result as separate parts: the video file, the Reel caption or captions sticker, comments and viewer counts, and broader account information. Want a hands-off second layer for your social media videos? SocialGuardian says it automatically backs up posts, stories, and videos from major platforms. Start with a public handle
Save your own Live immediately after it ends
If you hosted the broadcast, Instagram's official flow is:
- End the Live.
- Immediately tap Download Video.
Instagram says you can only use this download immediately after the Live ends. The saved file contains the video itself, without comments, likes, or viewer counts. Instagram Help Center
After the broadcast, Instagram also lets the host share a replay as a Reel. On the Reels publishing screen, the host can add a caption and tag people before sharing. The host can alternatively share from Live Archive or tap Download to save the video to the camera roll. Instagram Help Center
Turn on Live Archive before the next broadcast
Instagram says it automatically saves the Live videos you create and share to Live Archive. To check the setting, follow this documented path:
- Go to Create.
- Select Live.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Live.
- Make sure Save Live to Archive is turned on.
Archived Lives can be accessed after a broadcast ends. Instagram says you can share them as Reels or delete them, and you can turn off future archiving in Live settings. Instagram Help Center
If the replay or Download Video button is missing
Use this order of checks:
- Confirm that the Live has ended. Instagram says the download is available after the broadcast, through Live Archive, not during the live broadcast.
- Check Live Archive for the broadcast.
- Check that automatic saving is enabled in the Live settings.
- If you find the replay, use Download from the archive or share it as a Reel.
Be careful with fixed expiry claims. One targeted Instagram Help result says videos are archived for 30 days, while another current Help Center search says the provided articles do not specify how long Live videos remain in Live Archive. Do not treat a fixed period as an official guarantee. Instagram Help Center Instagram Help Center
Saving someone else's Live
Instagram says viewers cannot download an Instagram Live natively. Only the person who hosted it can save it to a phone or access it through Live Archive. Instagram Help Center
If the host shared the replay to the profile, viewers can find and watch it by opening the profile's Reels tab. Instagram Help Center
A secondary guide describes recording a host-shared replay on a phone or PC as an alternative. That source gives only a brief PC recommendation, so use the concrete iPhone or Android procedures below when you need a documented device workflow. GadgetsToUse
iPhone screen recording
Apple's documented procedure is:
- Swipe down from the top-right to open Control Center.
- Tap the gray Record button.
- Wait for the three-second countdown.
- To stop, tap the Screen Recording button at the top of the screen, then tap Stop.
- Open Photos and select the recording in your Library.
Android screen recording
Google's documented procedure is:
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen.
- Tap Screen record. If it is not visible, swipe right; if it is still absent, tap Edit and drag Screen record into Quick Settings.
- Choose the recording options and tap Start.
- To stop, swipe down and tap the Screen recorder notification.
- Open Photos and go to Collections > On this device > Movies.
A secondary guide says a screen recording captures what is visible on screen, including comments and emoji as they appear. That is different from Instagram's native host download, which excludes comments, likes, and viewer counts. Oreate AI Instagram Help Center
If your backup needs to include the surrounding record as well as the video, SocialGuardian lists captions and metadata alongside posts, videos, Stories, Reels/Shorts, follower lists, following lists, and engagement among the content it protects. See the backup coverage
Preserve captions, comments, and account data separately
Captions and captions stickers
Instagram's Help Center says Live captions cannot be downloaded as a separate file from Live Archive. The documented way to add text after the broadcast is:
- Open Archive.
- Select Stories archive.
- Select Live archive.
- Share the broadcast as a Reel.
- Add a caption or use the captions sticker to generate text for the video before posting.
That gives you a Reel caption or captions sticker, but it is not a separate caption-file download. Instagram's general closed-caption documentation covers videos and Reels through the video Options menu and Accessibility and translations; it does not document a separate Live-replay caption setting. Instagram Help Center
Comments, likes, and viewer counts
The native download saves only the video. Instagram says comments, likes, and viewer counts are not included. Its Help Center search also does not provide a method to download comments from an Instagram Live video. Instagram Help Center Instagram Help Center
If those interactions matter, capture the visible replay while it is available using the iPhone or Android procedure above. The secondary screen-recording guidance says the recording captures what appears on screen, including comments and emoji. Oreate AI
Information export
For a broader Instagram information export on desktop, use this documented path:
- Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
- Click Meta Account.
- Click Your information and permissions.
- Click Export your information.
- Click Create export.
- Select the profile and click Next.
- Select Export to device.
- Choose specific information, a date range, format, notification email, and media quality.
- Click Start export.
Instagram says you need enough storage, and selected information and media quality affect the export size. When the export is ready, it is available for four days in Available downloads. Instagram also documents exporting to an external service and choosing how often the export runs, as well as the notification email and format. Instagram Help Center
A repeatable routine for public profiles
Use this sequence for future Lives:

- Download your own Live immediately after ending it. Instagram Help Center

- If comments or visible reactions matter, use the documented iPhone or Android screen-recording procedure while the replay is available. Apple Support Google Android Help Oreate AI
- Use Instagram's information export when you need the broader export options described above. Instagram Help Center
- For a public @handle, add a separate profile backup layer if you want posts, stories, videos, captions, and metadata handled together. SocialGuardian says it backs up posts, stories, and videos and lists captions and metadata among the content it protects. SocialGuardian
SocialGuardian says its onboarding uses only a public @handle and does not ask for a password or login. Its start page asks for a network and profile handle or URL, lets you add another profile, and advertises a no-password 30-day free trial that can be cancelled anytime. SocialGuardian Start free
Rights before saving or reposting
If you plan to repost someone else's Live, Instagram says you may only post content that does not violate another person's intellectual-property rights. It says posting copyrighted material without the owner's permission is not allowed and recommends using content you created yourself or obtaining written permission or a license from the author. Instagram Help Center
Set up a no-password profile backup before the next Live: choose a network, enter a profile handle or URL, and start the advertised 30-day free trial, which can be cancelled anytime. Start backing up
