If you are planning an account change, preparing for a possible lockout, or moving records, save your Instagram Followers and Following lists first. There are two useful backup types: an account information export and a current-list snapshot.
A single current Followers or Following export records one observed state. It cannot show who followed or unfollowed before that file existed; historical change needs at least two comparable snapshots. The distinction is documented here.
Need a dated record before you change accounts? SocialGuardian captures follower and following lists using only a public @handle, with no password or login. Start a backup
Option 1: Use Instagram's own information export
Desktop steps
On Instagram's desktop site, follow this documented path:
- Click More in the bottom left, then click Settings.
- Click Meta Account, then click Your information and permissions.
- Click Export your information.
- Click Create export.
Instagram's help instructions then describe selecting the profile, clicking Next, choosing Export to device, customizing the specific information, date range, format, notification email, and media quality, and clicking Start export.
App steps
A documented Instagram app path is:
- Go to your Instagram profile.
- Tap the three-line menu in the top right.
- Select Settings and privacy.
- Scroll to and tap Accounts Center.
- Select Your information and permissions.
- Tap Download your information.
- Select the Instagram account and choose Some of your information, including Followers and following lists.
The documented app path and information choices are here.
Choose only the information you need when that option is available. Instagram says you need sufficient storage for a device export, and that selected information types and media quality affect file size; choosing one information type makes the download smaller. See Instagram's export guidance.
Timing, format, and download window
Do not wait until the last minute. Instagram says an export link may take up to 30 days to arrive by email. When the export is ready, it is available for four days in Available downloads inside the Export your information tool; past requests appear in Past request, and an export can be deleted. Read the timing and availability details.
A description of Instagram's export says a downloaded report usually arrives as a ZIP containing JSON or CSV files and media; dated folders make later comparison easier. See the export-storage description. Another documented flow reports JSON for data and HTML for easier viewing, with an All time or specific-period choice. See the format and date-range description.
Instagram describes exporting files as password-protected and says only the account holder has access to that process. Review Instagram's security note.
Option 2: Create a current-list snapshot with Web Tidy
A current-list snapshot is different from Instagram's official information export. The workflow in this section is the third-party Web Tidy workflow: it creates a readable record of the Followers and Following states accessible in the current Instagram session. It is not an Instagram export feature. This is a point-in-time record, not a continuous event log. See Web Tidy's snapshot explanation.
Web Tidy snapshot workflow
- In Web Tidy, identify the profile. Record its handle or URL and whether you control it or merely have current access to it.
- Back up each direction separately in Web Tidy: run one Followers task and, if needed, a second Following task.
- In Web Tidy, fix the scope and choose a repeatable product row ceiling: 100, 200, 500, or 1,000 confirmed rows.
- Download the Web Tidy result as CSV or native XLSX.
- Keep the original unchanged, make a working copy, and write a small backup manifest.
Web Tidy documents the profile, separate-direction, download, original-file, and manifest steps. Its 100, 200, 500, or 1,000 confirmed-row ceilings and CSV or native XLSX output are Web Tidy product limits and formats, not limits or formats imposed by Instagram's official export. Check Web Tidy's output boundary.
Make the Web Tidy files reviewable
Use a dated, direction-specific naming pattern so the two list types cannot be confused. For example:
followers-YYYY-MM-DD.csvfollowing-YYYY-MM-DD.xlsx
Put the unchanged originals in a dated folder, then make working copies for sorting or comparison. This follows Web Tidy's evidence-backed requirements to preserve the original, record direction and coverage, and keep the raw file separate from edited copies. Review Web Tidy's snapshot checklist and the dated-folder guidance.
A compact Web Tidy manifest can look like this:
source_profile: @handle-or-profile-url
direction: Followers
terminal_state: [record the Web Tidy terminal state]
confirmed_rows: [record the Web Tidy confirmed count]
ceiling: 500
coverage: [record the scope and coverage]
structure: 14 columns retained
identifiers: text
original: preserved separately
These fields record the source profile, direction, Web Tidy terminal state, confirmed rows, product ceiling, coverage, structure, and original-file status. Retain all 14 columns and preserve identifiers as text; these are Web Tidy verification requirements, not a specification for Instagram's official export. Do not replace the raw Web Tidy file with the working copy. Use Web Tidy's documented verification checklist.
Web Tidy stop conditions and partial results
The Web Tidy snapshot only works with a target the current Instagram session can access. It does not bypass private profiles, login challenges, rate limits, unavailable profiles, or lost page context. Review Web Tidy's access limits.
If one of those conditions interrupts a Web Tidy run, stop calling the result complete. Preserve any downloaded raw file, set the manifest's coverage to the portion actually confirmed, and label the artifact partial. Do not infer the missing rows or compare a partial result as if it covered the selected scope. When access is available again, run a new Web Tidy snapshot and record its terminal state separately. Web Tidy's explicit access boundaries and checklist fields support this stop-and-label rule. See Web Tidy's documented limits and checklist.
Need an ongoing record without giving an app your Instagram password? SocialGuardian uses your public @handle and captures follower and following lists, without asking for a password or login. Set up your profile backup
Option 3: Keep recurring snapshots without handing over a password
Choose a cadence that matches the decision you are trying to support:
- Save once to establish a baseline; no change can be measured until another comparable snapshot exists.
- Save monthly for lower file-management overhead.
- Save weekly for a narrower observation window.
- Save before and after a campaign when those two states matter.
More frequent files narrow the observation window but do not reveal the exact time of a relationship event. See the cadence guidance.
SocialGuardian's features page lists follower list and following list among the content it captures. It also says the service creates automated daily snapshots, stores data in secure cloud storage, and organizes backups by platform and date. Review the documented features.
To start that service:
- Choose a network.
- Enter the profile handle or URL.
- Use Add another profile if needed.
- Optionally enter an email for the first-backup confirmation; the start page says only backup confirmations and reports are sent there.
Open the documented start flow. The service says it uses only a public @handle and does not ask for a password or login. See the password warning.
Protect and verify the backup
For a Web Tidy snapshot, use this Web Tidy-specific verification record after each run:
| Check | Record |
|---|---|
| Source profile | Handle or profile URL recorded for the Web Tidy run. Web Tidy checklist |
| Direction | Followers or Following task recorded for Web Tidy. Web Tidy checklist |
| Terminal state | The Web Tidy run's recorded ending state. Web Tidy checklist |
| Confirmed rows | The confirmed count from the Web Tidy run. Web Tidy checklist |
| Product ceiling | 100, 200, 500, or 1,000 for a Web Tidy current-list snapshot. Web Tidy output boundary |
| Coverage | The scope actually captured by Web Tidy. Web Tidy checklist |
| Structure | All 14 Web Tidy columns retained; identifiers preserved as text. Web Tidy checklist |
| Original | Web Tidy raw file preserved separately from the working copy. Web Tidy checklist |
The row ceilings, CSV/XLSX output, terminal state, 14-column structure, and identifiers-as-text instruction in this table describe Web Tidy's product workflow. They are not general Instagram export requirements. Instagram's official export has its own available information, format, and storage choices. Review Instagram's export guidance.
For a Web Tidy current-list snapshot, use the same manifest and stop rule: if a private profile, login challenge, rate limit, unavailable profile, or lost page context interrupts the run, preserve the raw partial result, record its coverage, and do not treat it as complete. Review Web Tidy's documented access limits.
For Instagram exports, store files in dated folders and keep sensitive exports in secure storage. A spreadsheet can compare two exports and highlight changes. See the storage and comparison guidance. Also remember that a ready Instagram export is available for four days in Available downloads. Review Instagram's download-window guidance.
Keep follower and following records organized by platform and date, with daily snapshots and secure cloud storage, as described in SocialGuardian's features. Create your SocialGuardian backup
What to do if you lose access
Treat the archive and account recovery as separate tasks. Meta directs people who cannot log in or think an account was taken over to Instagram's recovery flow, and says some recovery steps vary by account. Read Meta's hacked-account guidance.
If you can still log in after a suspected hack, Meta recommends this sequence:
- Change your password or send yourself a password-reset email.
- Turn on two-factor authentication.
- Confirm that the phone number and email address in account settings are correct.
- Check Accounts Center and remove linked accounts you do not recognize.
- Revoke access to suspicious third-party apps.
Review the full security sequence.
If you cannot log in, Meta documents this login-link path:
- On the login screen, tap Forgot password?
- Enter the username, email address, or phone number associated with the account.
- Select Send login link.
- Complete the captcha and continue.
- Follow the login link sent by email or text message.
See Meta's login-link instructions.
For another person's list, the official export process is account-holder-only. A Web Tidy current-list snapshot requires a target the current Instagram session can access and does not bypass private profiles, login challenges, rate limits, unavailable profiles, or lost page context. See Instagram's export access note and Web Tidy's snapshot access limits.

How long does an Instagram data export take?
Instagram says the export link may take up to 30 days to arrive by email, and a ready export is available for four days in Available downloads. Instagram's timing guidance.
Can I back up someone else's Instagram followers or following list?
The official Instagram export process is password-protected and only the account holder has access to it. A Web Tidy current-list snapshot only works for a target the current Instagram session can access. Instagram's security note and Web Tidy's snapshot access limits.
Does an Instagram backup show who unfollowed me?
No single current Followers or Following export shows events before the file existed; historical change needs at least two comparable snapshots. See the snapshot limitation.
What format does an Instagram followers/following export use?
An Instagram downloaded report is described as a ZIP that may contain JSON or CSV files and media. Another documented Instagram flow reports JSON for data or HTML for easier viewing. Separately, Web Tidy's third-party current-list workflow outputs CSV or native XLSX, not JSON. ZIP description, Instagram format choices, and Web Tidy's output boundary.
How often should I back up my Instagram followers and following?
Save once for a baseline, monthly for lower file-management overhead, weekly for a narrower observation window, or before and after a campaign. More frequent files do not reveal the exact time of a relationship event. See the cadence guidance.
How do I protect my Instagram backup files?
Instagram describes exports as password-protected. For an Instagram export, store files in dated folders and keep sensitive exports in secure storage. For a Web Tidy snapshot, retain all 14 Web Tidy columns with identifiers as text and separate the raw file from edited copies. Instagram's security guidance, storage guidance, and Web Tidy's raw-file guidance.
Can I recover my followers and following after losing access to Instagram?
Meta's recovery flow can help with account access, but available recovery steps vary by account. Keep the follower and following archive as a separate record of the observed lists. Meta's hacked-account guidance and the snapshot limitation.
