Engagement Rate Calculator

Type a @handle and get the profile's real engagement rate from its last 12 public posts — median-based, so one viral hit can't skew it. No sign-up. Or switch to manual mode for any platform.

Public profiles only. We read the last 12 posts and use the median — one viral video can't inflate the score.

We only read public data and never ask for your login. Lookups are limited per day — powered by the same engine that backs up profiles for SocialGuardian customers. See the 2026 benchmarks →

How engagement rate is calculated

The most widely used formula is (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, averaged over your recent posts. It answers a simple question: out of everyone who could see a post, how many cared enough to react? Brands and agencies use exactly this number when they price collaborations, which is why a small account with a 6% rate is often worth more to a sponsor than a huge account stuck at 0.8%.

What counts as a good engagement rate

It depends on the platform and on account size — engagement falls as audiences grow. On Instagram, 1–3% is normal and anything above 6% is excellent. TikTok runs hotter: 3–6% is typical and strong videos clear 10%. On X, 0.5–1% is already solid. Compare yourself against accounts of a similar size on the same platform, not against a global average.

How to raise it

Post consistently, reply to comments in the first hour, and study which of your own posts earned the most reactions — format, topic, tone — then make more of those. That last part is exactly what SocialGuardian's AI post advisor automates: it analyses your backed-up posts and tells you what your audience actually responds to.

Engagement rate FAQ

Should I use followers or reach to calculate engagement?

Both are valid. Follower-based (this calculator) is the standard for comparing accounts and pricing sponsorships, because follower counts are public. Reach-based rates are better for judging individual posts, but they need analytics access and can't be compared across accounts.

Why is my engagement rate dropping as I grow?

It's normal. Larger audiences contain more passive followers, and feeds show your posts to a smaller share of them. What matters is the trend among accounts of your size — and whether your absolute reactions keep climbing.

Do saves and shares count?

Many brands now look at (likes + comments + saves + shares) ÷ followers, especially on Instagram Reels and TikTok. Saves and shares aren't public, so this calculator uses the public formula — add them to the likes field if you have them and want the richer version.

How many posts should I average?

Your last 10–12 posts is the common convention — enough to smooth out one viral hit or one flop, recent enough to reflect the algorithm you're living with now.
