If a Snapchat Memory matters, do not stop at seeing it inside the app. A third-party guide notes that Memories are tied to the Snapchat account, so losing account access can make them unreachable; it recommends keeping a second copy outside Snapchat. Read the account-access warning.
Use this order:
- Save Snaps and Stories to Memories.
- Confirm Backup Progress says Complete.
- Create a separate copy with Snapchat’s My Data export.
- Keep private Snaps protected without losing the passcode.
Build an independent archive for the public social content you manage on supported networks. SocialGuardian uses a public username rather than a password and archives posts, Stories, and videos. Start preserving your public content
Save new Snaps, Stories, and Camera Roll items correctly
Save an entire Story to Memories
- Tap your Bitmoji or Story icon at the top to open My Account.
- Tap the download icon next to the Story.
This is Snapchat’s path for saving an entire Story to Memories. See Snapchat’s Story instructions.
To save only one Snap from a Story:
- Tap your Bitmoji or Story icon at the top to open My Account.
- Tap the Story icon to view it.
- Press and hold the Snap you want to save.
- Tap Save Snap.
Snapchat documents this single-Snap path. If you are part of someone else’s Story, Snapchat says you can save only the Snaps you added. Read the ownership limitation.
Save a new Snap
Create a Snap, then tap the download icon at the bottom to save it to Memories. Snapchat’s save instruction gives this step.
Save future Snaps to Memories and Camera Roll
Snapchat’s Save Button setting lets you choose where Snaps are saved:
- Open My Account.
- Tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to App & Privacy and tap My App.
- Under Customize My App, tap Memories.
- Tap Save Button.
- Choose Memories, Memories & Camera Roll, or Camera Roll.
See Snapchat’s Save Button instructions. Snapchat also says it does not back up Camera Roll media to Memories. Check Snapchat’s backup guidance.
Turn on Story auto-save and Smart Backup
Enable Auto-Save My Story Snaps
- In My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to App & Privacy and tap My App.
- Under Customize My App, tap Memories.
- Tap Auto-Save My Story Snaps.
Snapchat’s current auto-save path keeps new My Story Snaps flowing into Memories according to that setting.
Enable Smart Backup
- In My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to App & Privacy and tap My App.
- Tap Memories.
- Toggle on Smart Backup.
When Smart Backup is enabled, Snapchat says your Memories may back up over mobile data when Wi-Fi is unavailable. Read Snapchat’s Smart Backup guidance.
If you also manage public profiles on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitch, or Pinterest, SocialGuardian performs daily automated backups and manages multiple profiles in one dashboard. Set up your archive
Verify that Memories are completely backed up
Do this check before logging out, switching devices, or uninstalling Snapchat:
- In My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll to Apps & Privacy and tap My App.
- Under Customize My App, tap Memories.
- Check that Backup Progress says Complete.
Snapchat’s verification steps identify the status to look for.
If Backup Progress says “# Snaps Remaining” or “No Network Connection,” Memories are not completely backed up. Snapchat advises using good cellular service or connecting to Wi-Fi. See the troubleshooting guidance.
A backup icon on a Snap or Story in Memories means that item is not backed up yet. Snapchat also says lost Memories that were not successfully backed up cannot be recovered. Read Snapchat’s warning.
Download all Memories with Snapchat My Data
For an independent copy you control, request a Memories export through Snapchat’s My Data flow.
Request the export
- Log in at accounts.snapchat.com, or open Snapchat Settings and select My Data.
- Click My Data.
- Select the data you want to include.
- Under Select data to include, turn on Export your Memories.
- Click Request Only Memories.
- Select the date range.
- Confirm the notification email address.
- Click Submit.
Snapchat’s My Data instructions cover the request and the Memories-only option. A broader Download My Data file can include Snap History, Saved Chat History, Memories, Friends, Location, and Search History. See the available categories.
Snapchat says the download arrives as a ZIP file. Processing time varies with download size; Snapchat strives to deliver data within 7 days, but large downloads can take longer. Read the processing-time note.
Download the Memories from the ZIP
- Use the email link when the export is ready, or open recent exports.
- Select See exports.
- Select Download.
- Extract the ZIP file.
- Open index.html in a browser.
- Choose Memories in the left navigation.
- Download individual Memories or all of them at once.
Snapchat provides these post-download steps.
Protect private Snaps without losing the passcode
My Eyes Only is a passcode-protected area for Snaps and Stories moved from Memories. You need the My Eyes Only passcode to view them, and Team Snapchat cannot help recover them if you forget that passcode. Read Snapchat’s My Eyes Only guidance.
Only photo Snaps and video Snaps shorter than 10 seconds can be moved to My Eyes Only. Check the content limitation.
For the first-time setup, the paths differ by platform.
iOS
- Swipe up from the Camera Screen to open Memories.
- Press and hold a Snap, tap More, then tap Hide Snap (My Eyes Only).
- Tap Quick Setup.
- Choose a 4-digit passcode and enter it again to confirm it.
- Tap Continue, then Finish.
Snapchat’s iOS steps provide this flow.
Android
- Swipe up from the Camera Screen to open Memories.
- Press and hold a Snap, then tap Hide.
- Tap Quick Setup.
- Choose a 4-digit passcode and enter it again to confirm it.
- Tap Continue, then Finish.
Snapchat’s Android steps provide this flow.
A repeatable Snapchat preservation checklist
Use this sequence whenever you add important content:
- Save new Snaps with the download icon and save entire Stories with the Story download icon. Review the save paths.
- Turn on Auto-Save My Story Snaps and Smart Backup. Review the settings paths and Smart Backup behavior.
- Check Backup Progress until it says Complete. Review Snapchat’s verification rule.
- Request a Memories-only My Data export and download the resulting files. Review the export workflow.
- Keep the My Eyes Only passcode safe if you use that private area. Review the passcode warning.
For other public social profiles, SocialGuardian says it keeps an independent copy, performs daily automated backups, supports multiple profiles in one dashboard, and lets users export their full archive at any time. See how the archive works.
