WhatsApp gives you two different ways to preserve conversations:

  • A restore backup is tied to the platform account used by WhatsApp: Google Account on Android or iCloud on iPhone. WhatsApp says chats and media can be restored only from the last successful backup on the device. WhatsApp explains the Android restore limit and the iPhone restore limit.
  • An independent chat export creates a ZIP file from an individual or group chat. WhatsApp says the export cannot be re-imported because it is a text file rather than a backup file. See WhatsApp's export guidance.

Choose a restore backup when you need WhatsApp recovery on a phone. Choose an export when you need a separate copy to keep or share. They are not interchangeable.

For a separate archive of supported public social profiles, SocialGuardian captures posts, photos, videos, stories, captions, and metadata automatically according to SocialGuardian. Start with your public profile

How to back up WhatsApp chats on Android

Check the Android requirements

WhatsApp lists these requirements for a Google Account backup:

  • An activated Google Account on the device.
  • Google Play services installed.
  • Enough free space on the device and in the Google Account.
  • A strong, stable internet connection.

Check WhatsApp's Android backup requirements.

Make a manual Android backup

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Menu > Settings.
  2. Tap Chats > Chat backup.
  3. Tap Back up.

Those are WhatsApp's documented manual-backup steps for Android. Read the Android steps.

Turn on recurring Android backups

  1. Open Menu > Settings > Chats.
  2. Tap Chat backup > Back up to your Google Account.
  3. Select a schedule other than Never or Only when I tap “Back up”.

If the Google Account frequency is set to Daily, WhatsApp says chats are saved to the Google Account every night after the local backup. See the recurring-backup instructions.

Include Android videos and status media deliberately

Android backup settings include these controls:

  • Include videos in chats: videos sent and received in chats are backed up.
  • Back up using cellular: backups are allowed when the phone is not connected to Wi-Fi.
  • Include status archive: archived status videos and photos are backed up with chats.

Review WhatsApp's Android media and connection settings.

Protect the Android backup with end-to-end encryption

WhatsApp's documented setup is:

  1. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
  2. Tap End-to-end encrypted backup.
  3. Tap Turn on, then Create a passkey and follow the prompts.
  4. Alternatively, tap More options to create a password or use a 64-digit encryption key.

End-to-end encrypted backups add the same end-to-end protection to Google Account and iCloud backups. WhatsApp says the backup cannot be accessed without the password, encryption key, or passkey, and WhatsApp cannot send a copy, reset it, or restore it if the credential is lost. Read WhatsApp's encrypted-backup guidance.

How to back up WhatsApp chats on iPhone

Make a manual iPhone backup

  1. Open WhatsApp Settings or tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Chats > Chat backup > Back up now.

See WhatsApp's iPhone manual-backup steps.

Turn on automatic iPhone backups

  1. Open WhatsApp Settings or tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Chats > Chat backup.
  3. Tap Auto backup and choose a backup frequency.

This is the documented iPhone path for backing up chats to iCloud. Read the iPhone automatic-backup instructions.

Check iPhone storage and media settings

Before an iPhone WhatsApp iCloud backup, WhatsApp says to check that:

  • The iPhone is updated to the latest iOS.
  • Available iCloud and iPhone storage are each at least 2.05 times the backup size.
  • The phone number and iCloud account match the ones used to create the backup.

On iPhone, Include videos controls videos sent and received in chats, while Include status archive controls archived status videos and photos. Check WhatsApp's iPhone requirements and media settings.

If you also need an archive for public profiles on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitch, or Pinterest, SocialGuardian keeps that content in one place according to SocialGuardian. See how the archive starts

How to export a WhatsApp chat with media

Use WhatsApp's export when you want a separate copy of a specific conversation rather than a restore backup.

  1. Open an individual or group chat.
  2. Tap the contact's name or group name, then choose Export chat.
  3. If the chat contains media, choose Attach Media or Without Media.
  4. Choose a destination such as Message, Mail, or Add to Notes.
  5. WhatsApp exports the chat history as a ZIP file.

WhatsApp says view-once messages are not exported. It also says the exported chat cannot be re-imported because it is a text file rather than a backup file. Follow WhatsApp's export instructions and limitations.

Should you choose Attach Media or Without Media?

  • Choose Attach Media when the exported copy should include the media option documented by WhatsApp for that chat export.
  • Choose Without Media when you want the export without its media attachments.

The export screen's two choices are documented as Attach Media and Without Media; WhatsApp's guidance does not turn the export into a restorable backup. Review the export choices.

How restore works, and what it cannot recover

WhatsApp's documented recovery boundary answers what to expect if you skip a backup: chats and media can only be restored from the last successful backup on Android or iPhone. Android restore limit and iPhone restore limit.

Android restore from a Google Account backup

WhatsApp's documented restore sequence is:

  1. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
  2. Tap Restore when prompted.

The phone number used for backing up and restoring must be the same. WhatsApp also says messages sent and received after the latest backup cannot be restored, and videos are restored only when Include videos was enabled before the latest backup. Read the Android restore requirements.

Because each new Android Google Account backup replaces the old one, WhatsApp says old backup files cannot be restored. See the Google Account backup limitation.

iPhone restore boundary

For iPhone, WhatsApp says chats and media can be restored only from the last successful backup on the iPhone. It also says the only way to recover or transfer that backup to another iPhone is with iCloud. Read the iPhone restore guidance.

Transfer Android messages to a new Android phone

Google documents this Android-specific flow:

  1. On the old Android phone, open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap More > Settings > Chats > Chat backup.
  3. Tap Back up.
  4. On the new phone, install WhatsApp and sign in with the same phone number used on the previous device.
  5. For a Wi-Fi transfer, choose Transfer from old phone. For a cloud restore, choose Restore from backup.

Google recommends cloud restore when an updated cloud backup exists. Google also warns that these instructions are for a new Android device, may not work for other operating systems or devices, and that WhatsApp does not guarantee transfer success. Read Google's Android transfer instructions.

A practical WhatsApp backup and archive checklist

  • Decide whether the goal is phone recovery or a separate copy. Use the platform backup for recovery; use Export chat for a ZIP copy that cannot be re-imported. WhatsApp's export guidance
  • On Android, check the Google Account, Google Play services, device and account storage, and internet connection before backing up. Android prerequisites
  • On iPhone, check the latest iOS and the documented 2.05-times storage requirement before an iCloud backup. iPhone prerequisites
  • Decide whether videos and archived status media belong in the backup, then check the platform's Include videos and Include status archive settings. Android settings and iPhone settings
  • If using end-to-end encrypted backup, retain the passkey, password, or 64-digit encryption key. WhatsApp says it cannot reset or restore an encrypted backup when that credential is lost. Encrypted-backup guidance
  • Before relying on a restore, remember that WhatsApp uses the last successful backup, and on Android each new Google Account backup replaces the old one. Android restore limits
