If you are about to change phones, log out of Snapchat, or uninstall the app, check Memories first. Snapchat advises making sure Memories are completely backed up before any of those actions.

This guide separates three jobs: verify Snapchat's own backup status, create a downloadable Memories copy, and handle Camera Roll media separately.

Want an independent archive for public social content while you protect your Snapchat account? SocialGuardian says it automatically backs up posts, stories, and videos from major platforms - start with your @handle.

Check whether Snapchat Memories are fully backed up

Snapchat's backup check is an in-app status check:

  1. In My Account, tap the gear icon to open Settings.
  2. Scroll to Apps & Privacy and tap My App.
  3. Under Customize My App, tap Memories.

These labels and steps come from Snapchat's support instructions. The result to look for is Backup Progress: Complete. Snapchat considers Memories fully backed up when Backup Progress says Complete.

Use the item-level check as well. If a Snap or Story in Memories shows the backup icon, that item is not backed up yet.

What you see What it means
Complete Snapchat considers Memories fully backed up.
# Snaps Remaining Memories are not completely backed up.
No Network Connection Memories are not completely backed up.
Backup icon on a Snap or Story That item is not backed up yet.

Snapchat explains that โ€œ# Snaps Remainingโ€ or โ€œNo Network Connectionโ€ means Memories are not completely backed up.

Fix an incomplete backup before changing devices

If Backup Progress shows # Snaps Remaining or No Network Connection, make sure the device has good cellular service or is connected to Wi-Fi. Then use the Memories status check again and do not treat the backup as finished until it says Complete.

Most importantly, do not use an incomplete status as permission to proceed. Snapchat says to make sure Memories are completely backed up before you:

  • log out of Snapchat;
  • log into Snapchat on a different device; or
  • uninstall Snapchat.

If the status still shows a number of Snaps Remaining, No Network Connection, or an item-level backup icon, the saved Snapchat guidance does not consider the backup complete.

Download a Memories-only Snapchat export

Checking Backup Progress protects against an incomplete Snapchat backup. To keep a separate local copy, Snapchat documents a Memories-only export in its My Data instructions. The flow starts at accounts.snapchat.com.

  1. Log in to your account on accounts.snapchat.com.
  2. Click My Data.
  3. Under Select data to include, turn on Export your Memories.
  4. Click Request Only Memories.
  5. Select the date range for the export.

After Snapchat prepares the export, it provides an email link or a See exports area. Select Download to retrieve it. Snapchat recommends using a computer rather than a mobile device for the download.

To inspect the downloaded copy locally, extract the ZIP, open index.html in a browser, and select Memories in the left navigation. Snapchat says that page lets you download individual Memories or all of them at once. See Snapchat's export instructions.

Treat the Snapchat backup check and the downloaded export as two different tasks: Complete confirms Snapchat's backup status, while the export gives you a local copy you can inspect and download from.

Keep Camera Roll media separate from Memories

Snapchat's Memories backup does not back up media from your device's Camera Roll to Memories. Snapchat states: โ€œWe do not back-up your camera roll media to Memories.โ€

That means your checklist needs two separate questions:

  • Does Snapchat's Memories screen show Backup Progress: Complete?
  • Are the photos and videos in your Camera Roll protected by the photo-library backup you actually use?

iPhone and iPad: review iCloud Photos

For iPhone or iPad, Apple's documented path to enable iCloud Photos is:

Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos > Sync this device

Those are the steps in Apple's support documentation. Apple says photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats at full resolution. It also says edits made in Photos on one device automatically update across the user's other devices when iCloud Photos is used.

Do not treat that setting as a substitute for checking Snapchat Memories. Snapchat's Camera Roll rule and Snapchat's Backup Progress status are separate checks.

Apple says photos uploaded to iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup, so keep backup copies of your photo library. Accidental deletions can be recovered in the Recently Deleted folder for 30 days. Read Apple's guidance.

Android: check Google Photos device backup

For Android device photos, Google documents this path in Google Photos: open the app, sign in, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Photos settings > Backup, and turn Backup on. Read Google's steps.

When the items finish backing up, Google Photos reports Backup complete. Google also warns that seeing device photos in Google Photos does not by itself prove they are backed up. This is a device-photo check, not a claim that Google Photos exports Snapchat Memories.

Protect the photo and video content you share publicly with a separate archive workflow. SocialGuardian says it archives supported content automatically after you share a public @handle - see how it works.

Add an independent archive for supported public social content

Snapchat's Complete status answers whether Snapchat has finished backing up Memories. An independent archive is a separate layer, not a replacement for that check.

SocialGuardian's homepage says its flow is:

  1. Share your public @handle.
  2. SocialGuardian archives the content automatically.
  3. Restore it anytime.

It also says users can export their full archive anytime, with no lock-in, and that it asks for a public username rather than a password or login. See SocialGuardian's description.

The homepage says SocialGuardian automatically backs up posts, stories, and videos from major social platforms. Use that claim within its stated scope: this article does not turn it into an undocumented Snapchat Memories import or export method.

Use this checklist before you make a risky change

  1. Open Snapchat's Memories backup status.
  2. Follow My Account > Settings > Apps & Privacy > My App > Customize My App > Memories.
  3. Check that Backup Progress says Complete.
  4. Scan Memories for any backup icon on a Snap or Story.
  5. If you see # Snaps Remaining or No Network Connection, use good cellular service or connect to Wi-Fi, then check the status again.
  6. Request a Memories-only export through My Data if you want a local copy: turn on Export your Memories, choose Request Only Memories, select a date range, then use the email link or See exports > Download when it is ready.
  7. Keep Camera Roll protection separate; Snapchat does not back up Camera Roll media to Memories.
  8. Only after Snapchat's status is complete should you log out, move to another device, or uninstall Snapchat.

If a Memory was lost without being successfully backed up, set expectations carefully: Snapchat says it is not possible to recover lost Memories that were not successfully backed up.

Ready to keep a separate archive for supported social content? SocialGuardian says you can export your full archive anytime, with no lock-in - get started with your @handle.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my Snapchat Memories are fully backed up?

Go to My Account > Settings > Apps & Privacy > My App > Customize My App > Memories and check that Backup Progress says Complete. A backup icon on a Snap or Story means that item is not backed up yet. Snapchat's support page documents both checks.

What should I do if Snapchat Backup Progress says Snaps Remaining or No Network Connection?

Make sure your device has good cellular service or is connected to Wi-Fi. Snapchat says either status means Memories are not completely backed up, so do not proceed with logging out, changing devices, or uninstalling until Backup Progress says Complete. Read the Snapchat guidance.

Does Snapchat back up Camera Roll photos and videos to Memories?

No. Snapchat says it does not back up Camera Roll media to Memories. Keep the Snapchat Memories check and your Camera Roll photo-library backup as separate tasks. Source: Snapchat Support.

Can I download all Snapchat Memories to a computer?

Yes. Snapchat's My Data flow lets you turn on Export your Memories, choose Request Only Memories, select a date range, and later select Download from the email link or See exports area. In the downloaded export, open index.html, choose Memories, and download individual Memories or all of them at once. Snapchat recommends using a computer for the download. See the export instructions.

How do I export Snapchat Memories from Snapchat My Data?

Log in at accounts.snapchat.com, click My Data, turn on Export your Memories, click Request Only Memories, and select the date range. When the export is ready, use the email link or See exports > Download. Snapchat documents this flow.

Can I back up Snapchat Memories to iCloud or another cloud photo service?

On iPhone or iPad, Apple documents enabling iCloud Photos at Settings > your name > iCloud > Photos > Sync this device. On Android, Google documents opening Google Photos, signing in, tapping your profile picture or initial, choosing Photos settings > Backup, and turning Backup on. Google Photos reports Backup complete when items finish uploading, but seeing device photos there does not by itself prove they are backed up. Snapchat separately says Camera Roll media is not backed up to Memories, so do not assume either photo-library setting is a documented bulk export of Snapchat Memories. See Apple's steps, Google's Android guidance, and Snapchat's Camera Roll note.

Can deleted or unbacked Snapchat Memories be recovered?

Snapchat says it is not possible to recover lost Memories that were not successfully backed up. That is why the Complete status check belongs before logging out, changing devices, or uninstalling. Read Snapchat's warning.

What is the safest way to keep a second copy of Snapchat Memories?

First confirm Snapchat's own Memories status says Complete, then request the official Memories-only export if you want a downloadable copy. Keep Camera Roll media separate and use an independent archive only within the service's stated scope. SocialGuardian says it can automatically back up posts, stories, and videos from major platforms, asks for a public @handle rather than a password or login, and lets users export their full archive anytime. Review the service.
